Additionally, you can record in a 360 pickup pattern at up to 48kHz/24-bit resolution which will allow you to convert your recordings to 5.1 Surround.

Within the menu, set recording parameters such as direction and polar pattern, activate the Auto Start function and set file format. And youll find additional settings like Auto Gain Control to make sure your recordings are always pristine. And you can fine-tune your levels on the fly with the Record Level buttons on the front.

On the right side of the H2, you can plug in a powered 1/8" external stereo mic. Setting levels is easy with a Mic Gain slider for Low/Medium/High gain. You can also digitize analog recordings with the 1/8" Line In.
Use the USB 2.0 Interface to move your files to a PC or Mac for storage, editing and playback. The time stamp function is great for reference during production. And you can even use the H2 as a USB mic and record directly to your favorite digital audio software.

I am very happy with this purchase. It is easy to use, although the start up time is a little slower than I prefer. The sound quality is good for such an inexpensive device. It eats batteries though, I suggest using the supplied power cord when you can.
H2 Zoom - Good Stuff...

I have had the H2 for a little less than a month now. Ive been pleasantly surprised and very pleased with the overall quality of the recordings so far. The accuracy is excellent. The functionality of unit itself is beautiful in its simplicity. Easy to learn and use. By setting the REC MODE to record at 192k mp3, you get very good quality and just shy of six hours worth of continuous recording time, and thats with using the included 512MB SD card. Upgrade that to (a now ubiquitous) 4GB SD card, which at the time of this writing costs just under $10 US, and you have now increased your recording time limit eight fold.
I was impressed with the accessory package that is included with the H2 also. Particularly the inclusion of power and mic stand adapters. It seems the folks that designed the package really took the time to think about the end user and what they would need to start successfully using the unit right away. Very nice job. Especially with the current state of the consumer world being a forced, hyper la carte experience. (batteries-not-included anyone?) Having what you need in the box goes a long way to earning customer loyalty.
Im a drummer, and although I have pro level mics and some high end outboard equipment, the time to set all the mics up, connect the devices, get levels, etc. prior to recording a single note sometimes turns out to be more trouble than its worth. Especially if the original intent was to just capture a groove idea of some kind. For me, nothing kills creative inspiration quicker than getting into a tangle of mic cables and track levels.
Using the H2, I can setup my drums and put the recorder on a mic stand in front about ten feet out, and four foot high and I end up with a nice, balanced recording that I can archive, email, loop, or otherwise use. No muss, no fuss. The "L" position on the MIC Gain switch can handle some seriously high SPL levels.
Recording band rehearsals is just as simple. Mic stand in the middle of the room. Put the H2 in two channel surround so both the front and rear mics are engaged and hit record. Its really that easy.
Tip 1: There is (at the time of this writing) a firmware upgrade that brings the unit up to version 1.40. Always good to keep your gear updated whenever possible. The install was simple and straightforward.
Tip 2: Download and use the awesome (and free!) audio application, Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) for easy editing of the files you record with your H2 after transfer to your PC (via USB).
Suggestion to Zoom 1: Having the case made of aluminum or another light weight metal instead of plastic would go a long way to alleviate the constant fear of the resulting H2 gravity hard floor equation. Maybe even a rubberized shell would help. Pure speculation mind you as I have yet to drop the thing. But I find Im very careful with it. Next version?
Suggestion to Zoom 2: Im constantly hitting the "play/pause" key for cursor down moves instead of the right arrow. And I cant imagine Im the only one. Firmware change?
The H2 leaves little to be desired.

After reading many reviews on Amazon, I purchased two Zoom H2 Recorders. Right out of the box, they both worked. The quality of sound is amazing.
First Recorder:
I found no problems. I recorded a couple of pieces of single instrument music using built in Mics. The quality is great. I played back on head phones, on stereo, on TV ( R and B) with display blank, and to a laptop. All worked great. The laptop uses Win Vista. ITUNES and Win Media Player worked great. The file properties are : Type Wave Sound bit rate 2116 kbps, Audio sample size 24 bit , channels 2 (stereo) , Audio sample rate 44 khz and audio format PCM.
Second Recorder:
Playback also worked great on headphones , stereo, etc. But I have a problem when I tried to play on my laptop which uses Win XP Pro and the latest downloaded version of Win Media Player (version 11). I get error " one or more codecs to play the files could not be found" The file properties are the same as above. I found similar problem with Realone Player also. It plays well on ITUNES and also on Audacity software. I repeated the above on my 2 desktops ( Win XP Pro) also. I have the same problem when played on WMP.I contacted Tech support of ZOOM H2. But they are of no help. Can someone help me how to play it on Win Media Player? I must be missing something.

I got the H2 to get board mixes from my reggae bands live shows and also to record a bagpipe band that I play in. It works beautifully for both. The built in mike rig works great, it works well with an external mike (which I would recommend for anything requiring close miking)and it is easy to use. The menus are intuitive and it is very light weight. I would definitely be careful about dropping it though I dont think it would tolerate abuse well. Otherwise, I highly recommend it.
